NEMA AOO IN COLLABORATION WITH KOSEMA PAYS ADVOCACY VISIT TO GOVERNOR ODODO, BRIEFS ON KOGI STATE 2025 FLOOD PREPAREDNESS STATUS

In continuation of the flood sensitization campaign in Kogi State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Abuja Operations Office led by the Head, Mr Zakari Abubakar in collaboration with the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA) paid advocacy visit to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alh Usman Ododo. The visit was aimed at briefing the Governor on implications of NiMet and NIHSA SCP predictions 2025 in the State and to update him on the ongoing preparedness and response campaigns at National to subnational levels facilitated by NEMA with a view to mitigating impact of flooding in the state.

Mr Abubakar used the opportunity to highlight to His Excellency, the activities undertaken by NEMA including the stakeholder’s engagement on SCP, launching of NPRC at National down to community levels, to mitigate the impact of impending flood disaster in the State and country at large. He commended His Excellency for the establishment of the State’s EOC 2025 in the office of the Deputy Governor and assured him of NEMA’s support in facilitating seamless interagency coordination at the center.

In his response, the Governor, Alh Usman Ododo thanked NEMA for its continuous support to the state especially in the areas of capacity building and relief provision to persons affected by various disasters. He assured the team of the state government’s readiness to activate strategies that would build the flood preparedness capacity of vulnerable communities and strengthen state’s emergency response mechanism.

The Governor informed the guests that 42 facilities have been mapped out as temporary shelters for 2025 flood response and evacuation from prone areas to higher ground would commence in the next couple of days.
The team also took flood sensitization to staff and management of Kogi State Broadcasting Corporation. The need to strengthen existing collaboration between NEMA/SEMA and the corporation was emphasized.

While responding, the Director General of the Corporation, Hajiya Hauwa Yusuf thanked NEMA/SEMA for the visit and assured the team of continuous collaboration in areas of disaster information and communication across the flood prone communities in the state.
