The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Owerri Operations Office, coordinated emergency response operations following a road traffic accident involving a diesel tanker and a mini bus along Emmanuel College Road, off Nekede Road, Owerri, Imo State.
The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Friday, 10th July, 2026. Preliminary findings indicate that the accident may have resulted from a combination of a sharp bend, brake failure and loss of vehicle control.
Upon receiving the alert, NEMA immediately activated its emergency response plan and deployed personnel to the scene to coordinate rescue and recovery operations in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
As part of the response, emergency responders carried out rapid rescue operations, supervised the safe transloading of diesel into another tanker, cleared the accident scene to restore the free flow of traffic, and coordinated inter-agency response efforts to prevent secondary incidents.
The operation involved the Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Red Cross Society and other emergency responders working alongside NEMA.
The situation was successfully brought under control, and response operations were concluded at about 2:45 p.m. after the accident scene had been secured and normal traffic movement restored.
