NEMA ASSESSES FLOOD DISASTER IN OGBOMOSO NORTH AND OGBOMOSO SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Following a distress call regarding flooding in various communities within Ogbomoso North and Ogbomoso South Local Government Areas of Oyo State, the South West Zonal Office, in collaboration with the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA) and local government representatives, conducted an assessment of the affected areas today, October 10, 2024.

The assessment team, led by Mr. Olanrewaju Kazeem, Assistant Zonal Coordinator of the South West Zonal Office, expressed sympathy to the affected residents and encouraged them to adopt Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies. He emphasized the importance of avoiding construction on waterways and floodplains.

The flood caused extensive damage to residential buildings, shops, bridges, household items, fish ponds, poultry farms, electrical poles and cables and other valuables, with losses amounting to millions of Naira.

Several families have been displaced and are currently staying with relatives.

The affected residents have appealed to the government for assistance, while also hoping for a permanent structural solution to prevent future occurrences.
