Assessment of Rainstorm Disaster in Owan East LGA, Edo State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Edo Operations Office and the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) conducted a joint assessment of a rainstorm disaster that affected four communities in Owan East LGA: Otuo, Oguomo, Afuze, and Amoya. The assessment took place on Saturday, 15th March 2025.

The storm damaged over 100 houses, with many completely destroyed or roofs totally blown off

Approximately 240 households were displaced, forcing residents to seek shelter with relatives and friends. Electric poles were also damaged, resulting in a power outage across the affected areas.

Immediate relief materials will be provided to assist affected households. Additionally, tree planting should be promoted as a long-term measure to serve as windbreakers and mitigate future disasters.

The rainstorm has caused severe property damage and displacement, necessitating urgent government intervention for relief and rebuilding efforts. A formal report will be submitted for management’s consideration, emphasizing both immediate support and long-term preventive strategies.
