Assessment of Rain/Windstorm Disaster in Akure North, Idanre, and Ose LGAs of Ondo State

Following reports from Ondo SEMA about a devastating rainstorm that affected Eleyeowo, Ilu-Abo, and Owode in Akure North Local Government, Idanre in Idanre Local Government, and Ifon in Ose Local Government areas of Ondo State, a joint assessment team was deployed by the Ekiti Operations Office in collaboration with Ondo SEMA to evaluate the extent of damage. The assessment team included the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Adelami Olayide, NEMA led by ACSARO Abogunrin Adesina, Ondo SEMA, Red Cross, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Emergency Response Services, and community representatives.

The disaster occurred during heavy rainfall between Tuesday, 4th March 2025, and Friday, 7th March 2025. The assessment revealed massive destruction across the affected communities. At Akure Airport, both the control tower and the departure/arrival terminal were heavily damaged, halting airport operations. According to the Airport Manager, Mrs. Yemisi Adebiyi, a mobile control tower is being temporarily deployed to restore partial operations.

In Eleyeowo, 111 buildings were partially damaged, and 47 rooftops were completely blown off. Ilu-Abo recorded 42 partially destroyed rooftops and 11 completely destroyed. Owode Community had 37 partially damaged buildings and 5 completely destroyed rooftops. In Idanre, 62 buildings were partially damaged, and 27 rooftops were completely blown off. Ifon witnessed partial destruction of 51 houses and 18 rooftops completely blown off. Additionally, 28 shops were affected, and a total of 1,199 households were impacted by the rain and windstorm disaster. Several public infrastructures, including electric poles, places of worship, and schools, were extensively damaged.

Despite the widespread destruction, no casualties were recorded.
