
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Sokoto Operation Office has conducted assessment of the recent fire incident that occurred at Sokoto Market.
Following report of the incident,the Director General NEMA Mrs Zubaida Umar activated the Sokoto Operation office to deploy response team to the site to support in control of the inferno and also conduct assessment of the extent of damage caused by the disaster.
The DG NEMA also expressed concern over the recurring Market fire incidents that has occurred in Sokoto since January this year.
The Market has experienced fire incident for the third time this year, with the particular section popularly known as Kasuwar Kara experiencing the incident twice from the 3 experiences so far.
The recent incident, occurred last week Saturday 1st of March, 2025 at exactly 6:45am.
Early findings shows that the source of the fire is still unknown. A total of 53 shops were engulfed completely by the inferno this time, affecting goods worth millions of naira.
The items destroyed by the fire include, local poultry feeds, bags of millet, magarya ginger bread fruit, herbs and Kaba leaves.
The Market Association said the affected shop owners are completely overwhelmed by the fire incident, they call on government at all levels to come to the aid of the victims. The assessment was carried out in the company of the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
