






The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), through its Abuja Operations Office, has extended its sensitization program on tanker accidents and fire prevention to Lokoja, Kogi State, following a successful implementation in the Federal Capital Territory. The initiative aimed to address the increasing incidents of tanker-related accidents and fire outbreaks across the state.
The event brought together key stakeholders from the emergency response and transport sectors, including representatives of the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, NUPENG Tanker Drivers Association, NURTW, KOSEMA, FRSC, NOA, Fire Services, NSCDC, DSS, Nigerian Red Cross, academic institutions, and civil society organizations. The forum emphasized collaboration among agencies, public safety awareness, and the promotion of preventive strategies to mitigate the devastating impact of such incidents.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Zakari Abubakar, Head of NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office, highlighted the importance of proactive planning and strict adherence to safety protocols by fuel tanker drivers. He also emphasized the need for continuous public education to prevent future disasters.
The program featured lectures and practical sessions facilitated by the Federal Fire Service, FRSC, and the Nigerian Red Cross, covering safety regulations, emergency preparedness, and coordinated response measures during fire emergencies.
A significant highlight was a targeted sensitization session for tanker drivers and residents of Felele community, led by Mr. Abubakar, which focused on the dangers of scooping spilled petroleum products and the severe consequences for individuals and the wider community.
The sensitization program reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to disaster risk reduction through stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and community enlightenment.
