
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office (SOO), has conducted an assessment of the recent flood disaster that affected Tureta, Shagari, and Yabo Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Sokoto State. The flooding occurred between 23rd and 25th July, 2025.
The disaster, triggered by days of heavy downpours, affected more than 10 communities across the three LGAs. In Tureta LGA, the impacted communities include Kamfanin‑Ala, Shiyar Ikah, Shiyar Nwala, and Shigifar Dan‑Dili. In Shagari LGA, the affected areas include Shiyar Gaba, Lambara, Kambama, Mazoji, and Kajiji. Similarly, in Yabo LGA, Fegin Rafin Fawa and Shiyar Uban Dawaki were among the worst hit.
Preliminary findings from the assessment indicate widespread damage to houses and farmlands, with many residents directly affected across the three LGAs.
NEMA is working in collaboration with the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other stakeholders to provide the necessary assistance to the affected communities.
The Agency also reiterated its commitment to continuous monitoring and timely response to mitigate the impact of future disasters on vulnerable populations.
