NEMA ADVOCACY VISIT TO 3rd ARMOUR DIVISION OF THE NIGERIAN ARMY

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North Central Zonal Office, Jos, on Thursday 30th May, 2024 paid a courtesy and advocacy visit to the 3rd Armour division of the Nigeria Army, Rukuba Barracks, Jos Plateau State.

The Courtesy and Advocacy visit was led by the Zonal Coordinator Mr.Eugene Nyelong in company of some principal officers of the zone.

One of the aim of the visit was to inform the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General A.E Abubakar that NEMA was in his office to strengthen the existing collaboration between both organizations.

The ZC attest that the Nigerian Army remain one of of the critical stakeholder in disaster management in Nigeria and cited instances where the Nigerian Army provided security for staff of the agency in conducting of assessments and distribution of relief materials to Internally Displays Persons (IDPs).

The zonal Coordinator informed the GOC that the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency ( NIHSA) has predicted probable flood in 148 Local Government Areas in 31 States, which Plateau State has been categorized as a flood risk State in 2024 .

In an effort to mitigate flood and its impact, following the NIHSA 2024 prediction, the ZC said NEMA has carried out sensitization workshops including jingles in the electronic media to mitigate the impact of the flooding predictions.

The ZC further stated that the Agency was there to also discuss ways to enhance disaster preparedness, response and improve data collation , information dissemination strategies for action during and after emergencies.

Thereafter He also presented the National Contingency Plan (NCP)to the the GOC.

In his remarks, Major Gen. Abubakar who doubled as the Commander “Operation Safe Haven’ appreciated NEMA for the visit and noted that the Agency is very significant Nationally with the reality of climate change.

He assured NEMA of the Nigerian Army’s readiness through the DRUs to respond to any emergency and equally give security cover when the need arises.
