NEMA ENCOURAGES LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES AND COMMUNITY HEADS TO SCALE UP FLOOD PREPAREDNESS IN ANAMBRA STATE

In furtherance of mitigating the impact of flooding in high flood risk areas, the National Emergency Management Agency Enugu Operations Office met with the Local Government Authorities, and community leaders of Anambra East Local Government Areas.

The meeting which took place at the Anambra East Local Government Council Headquarters had in attendance the Local Government Chairman, Traditional Rulers of various communities, President Generals, Ward Councilors, Women and Youth leaders.

During the meeting, the Head NEMA Enugu Operations Office Mrs Ngozi Echeazu highlighted the charge made by the DG NEMA Mrs Zubaida Umar that residents of high flood prone areas heed warnings, be vigilant, put in place early actions, avoid risky behavior and cooperate with authorities during evacuations.
Mrs Ngozi further reminded the local government authorities and community leaders of their expected actions which include amongst others:

* Clearing of drainages
* preventing indiscriminate waste disposal
* demolition of structures on flood plains
* provisions of temporal IDP camps that are habitable
* early harvesting of farm crops to avoid losses

In response, the Local Government Chairman Hon Sir Ifeanyichukwu Chinweze commended NEMA for the efforts in enhancing disaster resilient communities. He stated that the meeting is apt as it provided opportunity for the sharing of knowledge, identifying needs, achieving prompt intervention and continous community participation.
The meeting also featured presentation by the NEMA team on Flood risks/preparedness
Immediately after the meeting, the NEMA team and the Chiarman of Anambra East Local Government Area visited Otuocha community to assess the water level.

The NEMA team equally visited the National Inland Waterways Agency to monitor the water gauge at the River Niger, Anambra State
