JOINT ASSESSMENT OF FLOOD DISASTER IN 6 COMMUNITIES IN UYO LGA, AKWA IBOM STATE

Following the distress call received from the Office of the Deputy Governor, Akwa Ibom State of a flood disaster in Six (6) communities namely: D-line Ewet Housing Extension, Udokan, Utang community, Osong Ama, Itiam Edem Akai, Dominic Utuk in Uyo LGA after an early Sunday morning downpour. Officials from the NEMA Uyo Operations Office, Akwa Ibom State SEMA (AKSEMA), Uyo Local Government and Community Leaders carried out an on-the-spot assessment to ascertain the extent of damage.

The NEMA team, led by the Ag. Head of Operations Mrs Aisueni Mmandu in company of Dr. Grace Jim, Permanent Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor, AKSEMA officials, Dr Grace Akpan and Isaac Umanna were warmly received on arrival by the Vice Chairman Uyo LGA, Hon. Silvia Ekong and other community leaders.

The team commiserated with the people over the flood disaster that affected the different communities where unfortunately one (1) death of an adult male was recorded with several persons injured. Efforts were also ongoing to free some persons trapped inside some of the affected buildings. The community leader expressed his appreciation to NEMA and the State Government for their prompt response.

The incident destroyed/affected buildings, household items, fences, business centres and other means of livelihood.

The State Government response was led by the Deputy Governor, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi who had visited the communities and on seeing the extent of the damage immediately solicited for NEMA’s intervention. 2:06:24
