Fuel Tanker Fire Sensitization and Simulation Exercise in Kaduna

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on June 4, 2025, organized a one-day Sensitization, Simulation, and Public Awareness Campaign on petrol tanker fire outbreaks at the Trailer Park, Maraban-Jos, along the Kaduna-Zaria Road.The event featured live demonstrations of emergency response strategies, including mass casualty evacuation resulting from fuel spills and fire outbreaks.Representing NEMA’s Director General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the Head of Operations in Kaduna, Mallam Sulaiman Muhammad, emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration in enhancing emergency preparedness and disaster response. Stakeholders present included SEMA, Fire Service, Nigeria Civil Defense, Police, Road Safety, KASTLEA, and the Nigerian Red Cross.Mrs. Umar, through her representative, expressed concern over the frequent loss of lives and property due to fuel tanker explosions, particularly caused by unsafe crowd behavior such as fuel scooping at accident scenes.The NDLEA Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Mr. Charles Abuu, warned trailer drivers against drug abuse, citing its impact on judgment and accident risks. He urged them to apply lessons from the campaign to remain disciplined and drug-free.Mr. James Ezekiel, Trailer Park Manager, praised the initiative and called on the state government to provide a dedicated fire truck for the area to bolster rapid response capacity.The highlight of the day was the simulation drill, which drew active participation from emergency agencies and demonstrated coordinated response to fuel-related fire emergencies.
