NEMA Lagos Territorial office LTO successfully carried out direct distribution of relief items to flood affected persons at Ilasan, St Kitizo Road, Elegushi road and Jakande communities as a support of the Federal Government on 14th September, 2024.
The intervention which took place at the Ilasan Community Primary School Ilasan, Jakande Estate had in attendance, representatives from the Office of the Honourable member representing Eti-Osa Federal Constituency, Chief Thaddeus Atta, Community representatives, beneficiaries, Police Force and members of the press.
The exercise commenced with cross checking of names of beneficiaries and stacking of the items for easy distribution.
Mr dafe Okpalefe, the Chairman, Ilasan Community Development Association in his welcome address thanked the Federal Government and NEMA on behalf of the affected persons and the community. He said, going by the damages and losses suffered by the community members, Mr. Dafe prayed that such incident would not occur in the community again. He urged the beneficiaries to be orderly in order to have a smooth and successful distribution.
Mrs Ibitayo Adenike who represented the Director General, Mrs Zubaida Umar commiserated with the persons affected by the flood. She expounded that the relief items being distributed are not compensation for what had been lost but was a support of the Federal Government to alleviate their suffering. Also, she used the opportunity to draw the attention of the beneficiaries to the current condition of weather and the effect of climate change on the environment, that they need to take good care of the environment. She concluded by highlighting some factors that contribute to flooding in the environment such as, building on floodplains, blockage of drainages and Canals, and improper disposal of wastes, that they should desist from such.
After the various remarks, the distribution started immediately with a flag-off ceremony, followed by direct distribution to the beneficiaries. Relief materials distributed include food and non food items.
