ASSESSMENT OF WIND STORM DISASTER IN FORTY-SEVEN COMMUNITIES IN ANDONI LGA OF RIVERS STATE

Sequel to the distress call from the Local Government Chairman from Andoni Council reporting the wind storm disaster to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) South-South Zonal office Port Harcourt by the Chairman , Hon. Barr. Erastus Awortu who made an SOS call for emergency alert to the agency,.

He reported that wind storm has ravaged Forty-seven(47) communities in Andoni LGA which lasted from 12 midnight to 2:30am.

Again Bar. Erastus C Awortu made an appeal to the State and federal Government for relief assistance to the vulnerable persons.

.In Response, The zonal Coordinator Mr Adebiyi Babatunde Razaq dispatched a team of NEMA officers to conduct an in the spot assessment of the Windstorm that affected communities in Andoni LGA.

The team was led by Mr Felix Akakara PSARO to the coastal Communities to ascertain the level of destruction in the 47 affected communities .

The team observed that the wind storm wreaked havoc in several communities in Andoni LGA .

The assessment revealed that about 4,876 persons were directly affected while 268 houses are partially destroyed, 202 – completely destroyed, while Most of the school buildings either primary or secondary school roofs has been blown-off and are in dear need of urgent repairs for the pupils/students before they resume from holidays.

Also five boats were destroyed by the wind storm in one of the fishing settlement, also, the roof of the Naval base in Ikuru Town was blown off, including a corper lodge , which is undergoing some repair work.

In conclusion the NEMA assessment Team lead in his response assured the officials that the Agency will look into possible areas to assist the affected persons considering the level of devastation caused by the windstorm.
