As part of its commitment to implementing a comprehensive disaster management strategy, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted a Training-of-Trainers programme for members of the NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards (EMVs).
The NEMA/NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards initiative leverages the reach and influence of Corps Members to promote a uniform, proactive approach to disaster management across the country. This bottom-up strategy fosters active community participation, enhances resilience, increases local ownership of disaster management processes, and strengthens prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and response efforts.
The training, held at the Enugu North Local Government Council Headquarters, Enugu State, was facilitated by the NEMA Enugu Operations Office team. Participants received practical and theoretical knowledge on basic disaster management, flood mitigation and preparedness, fire prevention, and first aid administration. The methods used included lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on exercises.
Key takeaways from the training included:
Correct use of fire extinguishers for fire suppression
Administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Providing aid to a choking victim
Practical tips on flood preparedness and response
The “See Something, Do Something” safety culture
Understanding risks, hazards, and vulnerabilities in communities
The programme has equipped the NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards with the knowledge and skills needed to carry out impactful Community Development Service (CDS) activities. These include awareness and sensitization campaigns in schools, markets, motor parks, community meetings, and places of worship — ensuring disaster risk reduction remains a collective responsibility.
