The Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation (PCFRR), through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has donated relief items worth ₦1 billion to the Borno State Government for distribution to victims affected by flooding.
During the handover ceremony in Maiduguri on Wednesday, NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, represented by the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Adamu Abdullahi Usur, highlighted the agency’s commitment to supporting flood victims. She noted that the relief items were part of ongoing efforts to aid communities affected by the collapse of the Alau Dam in Maiduguri.
“Today’s handover of relief materials donated by PCFRR is a testament to the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The materials will complement ongoing efforts to rebuild and rehabilitate flood-affected communities in Borno State. However, rebuilding requires sustained collective action,” she stated.
Umar called on stakeholders, including development partners, NGOs, and the private sector, to continue supporting the recovery efforts, emphasizing the need for collaborative action to restore hope and provide sustainable recovery pathways for the affected communities.
The donated items include 4,000 bags of beans (25kg), 5,000 cartons of noodles, 500 kegs of vegetable oil, 1,000 cartons of tomato paste, 3,000 foam mattresses (6×3), 3,000 pieces each of guinea brocade and wax prints, 3,000 mosquito nets, and 1,500 cartons each of diapers and sanitary pads, among other necessities.
Borno State Deputy Governor Umaru Kadafur expressed gratitude for the substantial donation by the committee, co-chaired by Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Dr. Olisa Agbakoba. He praised their swift and generous intervention following the devastating flood that struck Borno State on September 10, 2024.
Kadafur revealed that the committee allocated ₦1 billion for relief materials in response to NEMA’s call for assistance. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of victims and ensuring fair and efficient distribution through a specialized committee established for this purpose.
Speaking on behalf of the PCFRR co-chairmen, Hajiya Hajara Adam-Modu explained that the allocation of funds was based on NEMA’s recommendation, given the disaster’s severity in Borno State. She reassured stakeholders that the relief items would address immediate needs while also contributing to long-term recovery.
“These materials will provide immediate support and serve as a foundation for rebuilding lives and livelihoods. The Borno State Government remains committed to ensuring a transparent and efficient distribution process,” Adam-Goni stated.
The intervention reaffirms the federal government’s dedication to disaster resilience and recovery while demonstrating collective efforts to alleviate the suffering of flood victims in Borno State.
