In a bid to reduce tanker fire accidents and related emergencies, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, launched a public sensitization campaign across key locations in the state. The initiative targeted tanker drivers and communities vulnerable to fire outbreaks, with a focus on promoting safety awareness and preventive actions.
The campaign kicked off at OPIC, a common rest point for tanker drivers, where NEMA officials and NYSC Emergency Management Volunteers (EMVs) engaged drivers and community members with safety education and flyers. Emphasis was placed on the risks associated with tanker explosions and the need for vigilance and caution.
The outreach also extended to the NUPENG office at NNPC Ejigbo, where union members were briefed on disaster risk reduction strategies. Discussions centered on prevention, preparedness, and the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in minimizing road crashes and fire incidents.
Tanker drivers received practical safety tips such as inspecting vehicles before departure, avoiding overfilling, checking fuel lines, conducting routine maintenance, and undergoing regular safety training. The public was also cautioned against scooping fuel from accident scenes and urged to maintain a safe distance while emergency help is sought.
NUPENG members appreciated the effort and committed to spreading the message to others, reinforcing the collective goal of preventing fire disasters and safeguarding lives and property in Lagos State.
