The Lagos Operations Office (LOO) of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has responded to a fire outbreak that engulfed parts of Mandilas Market, Lagos Island, between 16th and 17th September 2025.
According to reports, the fire started around 7:00 p.m. on 16th September from a faulty changeover switch in one of the buildings before rapidly spreading to adjoining structures.
Rapid Response by Emergency Agencies
Officials of the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) LRU, and other stakeholders swiftly mobilized to the scene and commenced firefighting operations. The presence of highly flammable materials such as clothing, footwear, and plastics in the market contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Four buildings housing approximately 200 shops were completely destroyed in the incident. One individual sustained injuries from smoke inhalation and is currently receiving medical attention at a nearby health facility.
The combined efforts of all emergency responders ensured the eventual containment and complete extinguishing of the fire. The Nigeria Police Force was on ground to secure the area, cordon off the affected site, and prevent possible vandalism or looting.
NEMA Lagos Operations Office has continued to liaise with stakeholders to support affected traders and strengthen safety awareness in highly congested business districts.
