Officers of NEMA, Sokoto Operations Office SOO visited flood prone communities in Sokoto State that are predicted to experience flood according to 2024 AFO. The NEMA, SOO team went round these communities on a sensitization rally to create awareness about the threat of flood.
The sensitization message centred on proper waste management. The Head of Planning, Research and Forecasting Unit, Mr. Tukur Abubakar who represented the Head of Operations encouraged the people to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse in culverts and water ways. He noted that the rain water will need smooth flow to avoid flood.
While lamenting on the bad habit of improper disposal of solid waste, majorly in urban areas, Head of Operations educated the people on what they need to do for proper waste disposal and stressed on the need for residents of Sokoto State to comply with the early flood warnings.
NEMA, SOO was joined by other stakeholders like Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, EMVs and NGOs in Sokoto State.
Part of activities observed during the sensitization exercise include clearing of blocked drainages and waste in Sokoto metropolis. This was done to lead by example for the people to subsequently take a queue and clean there drainages.
Other places visited by the Sensitization Team were market and motor parks.
Some of the residents of Sokoto State while appreciating NEMA for its consistency in public enlightenment about flood, also called on the state government to provide big trash/waste bins on the road for proper waste management. They also advocated for the enlargement of some of the culverts that they said were too narrow.
