NEMA DOWNSCALES FLOOD EARLY WARNING STRATEGIES TO THE GRASSROOTS IN JIGAWA STATE

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) held a sensitization program on downscaling of the 2024 flood early warning strategies for effective early actions to save lives and properties at the grassroots in Jigawa State based on NIMET’s Seasonal Climate Prediction and NIHSA Annual Flood Outlook for 2024.

The exercise has in attendance the Deputy Governor Aminu usman who represented His Excellency the Executive Governor Umar Namadi of jigawa state and other relevant Stakeholders in emergency services like (NSCDC, DSS, Fire Service, Red Cross, Police, community-based organisations,religious leaders and non-governmental organizations)

NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar represented by Nura Abdullahi Territorial Coordinator NEMA Kano Territorial Office in her address said that as reflected in NEMA flood incidence reports Jigawa state has in the past severely been impacted by flood and for the 2024 rainy season, some local government areas in the state are under High and Moderate Flood Risk. She therefore urged stakeholders at all levels to collaborate with NEMA to manage flood risk in order to protect lives and livelihood.

While flagging of the downscaling exercise in Jigawa State, the deputy governor commended the DG NEMA and her team for their continued support to Jigawa State.He advised communities to heed to flood warnings and imbibe the mitigation strategies outlined by the Agency. He listed other concrete actions that should be undertaken to check flooding in the state in particular and the country in general.

The event featured a presentation from NEMA by Simon Katu Assistant Director, Disaster Risk Reduction, with the theme “Disaster Preparedness and Risk Reduction Strategies on outcomes of the 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook”.

The presentation identified LGA’s in Jigawa State that are classified as flood risk areas and recommended mitigative ways to contain the threat of the impending flood in the state.

There was also a brainstorming session where participants interacted on issues relating to the presentation. The traditional rulers and community leaders aired their views, challenges and solutions were given

Before the conclusion of the program the presentation was also translated to Hausa language in order for the participants to fully understand the message and pass it down to their various communities.
