NEMA DG commends Operation Safe Corridor

The Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed, has commended Operation Safe Corridors’ achievements in re-integrating repentant insurgents back into the society.

He made the remark while receiving the Coordinator, Operation Safe Corridor, Brig.-Gen. J.Y. Maina, and his team on Tuesday in Abuja.

Mr Ahmed said it was gratifying to note that the initiative by the government was yielding success for the restoration of peace and normalcy in the north-eastern region of the country.

“I remain hopeful that the number of repentant insurgents will continue to grow, as more of them surrender and embrace lasting peace.

“It is gratifying to see that of recent, so many Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered to the military on their own volition.

“This shows that a lot of them are fed up with the senseless crises and that there is light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

The director-general lauded the contributions of the international and local non-governmental organisations that had contributed to the success of the scheme since its inception.

Ahmed, while assuring of the agency’s commitment to play its role in achieving the mandates of the operation, however, suggested that a feedback mechanism should be put in place.

“The operation should put in place a feedback mechanism like a monitoring and evaluation scheme to measure the successes or otherwise of this laudable initiative.

“Your various partners and the public will be better informed on your achievements,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Maina explained that the aim of the visit was to appreciate the agency and it’s director-general for their support towards the initiative.

“The operation currently has 700 clients on ground, 940 clients have been successfully reintegrated into their communities, including 16 clients from Niger Republic.

There are 17 MDAs that are part of the Operation Safe Corridor, and we have been in existence for the past six years.

“The main objective is to encourage members of the Boko Haram and ISWAP that are operating in the north-eastern party of the country to take advantage of this non-kinetic approach by keying into the programme, and go through the de-radicalisation, rehabilitation and re-integration of the outfit,” Mr Maina added.
