NEMA DG pays courtesy visit to FCT Minister

Director General National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mustapha Habib Ahmed on Tuesday 2nd August 2022 led the management of the Agency on a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Federal Capital Territory Malam Muhammad Musa Bello in his office.

The DG NEMA was also accompanied by a member organizing committee for a National Workshop on Disaster Risk Management, the Executive Secretary of Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency Muhammad Mu’azu Mukaddas.

In his speech, the DG NEMA said the visit was aimed at consolidating and strengthening existing synergy between NEMA and FCT administration in the areas of disaster management. He said “we are working hard to re-establish a stronger partnership between the National Emergency Management Agency and FCT Administration on effective emergency preparedness, response mitigation and the building of national resilience.”

In this regard, he said NEMA had established its Abuja Operations to drive the partnership and strengthen grassroots emergency management in the FCT through which lots of successes have been recorded that include responses to various incidents and many lives and property saved.

However, he said these were being inhibited by some challenges. Thus, he appealed to the Honourable Minister to provide an alternative space to construct a new NEMA Emergency Response Bay (ERAB) to replace the former facility that was destroyed along Ahmadu Bello Way close to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for swift response to incidents around the Central Business District (CBD).

The DG NEMA also requested the FCT Minister to grant residential land for NEMA Staff to live closer to the Federal Capital City to allow their round the clock activation in times of sudden onset disasters for live saving rescue operations in the FCT.

Furthermore, he requested for the support of the Honourable Minister towards the proposed National Workshop on Disaster Risk Management in Abuja, specifically in the areas of venue, transportation and associated logistics.

In his response, the FCT Minister Muhammad Musa Bello acknowledged the closed working relationship of NEMA with the FCT Administration through its Emergency Management Agency. He specifically highlighted the successful joint response to various incidents in the FCT and human capacity activities from NEMA to FEMA, and assured his supports to the Agency. On the specific requests made by the DG NEMA, the Minster directed relevant officials of the FCT Administration to work with NEMA towards realizing them.

Also present with the Minister were the Permanent Secretary, DG FCT Emergency Management Agency Idris Garba Abbas, Coordinator Abuja Metropolitan Management Council and some heads of FCT Admin agencies.

The DG NEMA entourage included Director Search and Rescue Air Commodore Edward Kolawole Adedokun, Director Finance and Accounts Sani Ahmed Jiba, Director Disaster Risk Reduction Daniel Obot, Director Special Duties Onimode Bandele Abdullahi, Acting Director Planning Research and Forecasting Hajiya Fatima Kasim and Special Assistant to the Director General Idris Abubakar Mohammed
