NEMA Provides Relief Support to Victims of Gas Explosion at Ijora Badia, Apapa LGA

In line with its mandate to provide succour to disaster-affected persons, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office (LOO), in collaboration with Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), has distributed Federal Government–approved relief materials to persons affected by the recent gas explosion in Ijora-Badia, as well as other fire disasters within Apapa Federal Constituency, Lagos State.

The distribution exercise took place on Monday, 18th August 2025, at the Apapa-Iganmu LCDA Secretariat. It was attended by officials from NEMA LOO, the Member of House of Representatives representing Apapa Federal Constituency, Dr. Adetayo Olushola, Honourable Dr. Adetayo Olushola, the Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Mr. Olawale Jimoh, other council officials, and the affected beneficiaries.

While presenting the relief materials on behalf of the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the Head of Search and Rescue in Lagos Operation Office, Mrs Adenike Ibitayo recalled the tragic gas explosion incident at No. 12 Amusu Street, Ijora-Badia, which resulted in multiple fatalities, injuries, and the destruction of seven (7) buildings affecting 45 households. She emphasized the critical importance of safety in residential areas and the urgent need for preventive measures, particularly in light of the rising cases of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)–related explosions.

She further called on stakeholders to intensify efforts in reducing such incidents to safeguard lives and property. She also commended Honourable Dr. Adetayo for his proactive intervention during the incident, particularly in facilitating medical care for the injured.

In his remarks, Honourable Dr. Adetayo Olushola expressed appreciation to NEMA and the Federal Government for the timely intervention. He encouraged affected families to remain hopeful and resilient despite their losses, urging them to “take solace in God and be safety conscious.”

Following remarks from other dignitaries, the distribution of relief items commenced, with beneficiaries called forward individually to receive their support.

Relief Items Distributed were food and non-food items.
This intervention underscores NEMA’s commitment to disaster response and recovery, ensuring that affected citizens receive the necessary support to rebuild their lives.
