The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Lagos Territorial Office (LTO), in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, commenced the direct distribution of relief materials to flood victims on February 6, 2025. The beneficiaries were from Agboyi (I-III), Agiliti II, Odo-Ogun, and Itowolo communities in Kosofe and Ikorodu Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Relief Committee, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Ministry of Wealth Creation, supported the initiative. This intervention follows the devastating flood that affected several riverine communities in Kosofe and Ikorodu due to the release of water from the Oyan Dam in Ogun State in November 2024.
At the distribution sites in Agboyi and Itowolo, NEMA’s teams emphasized the commitment of the Director General, Mrs. Umar Zubaida, to adopting disaster risk reduction strategies aimed at mitigating the impact of floods in vulnerable communities nationwide.
The NEMA representatives also used the occasion to inform the communities about the recently released 2025 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP) by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET). They urged the communities to take proactive measures, such as clearing drains, ensuring proper waste disposal, avoiding construction on water channels, and adhering to early warning systems to prevent future disasters.
Additionally, the Lagos State Government representatives stressed the importance of environmental hygiene and flood prevention practices.
Traditional rulers present during the exercise commended NEMA for the relief efforts and expressed their gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries. They assured the authorities of their commitment to implementing the advice given to prevent future occurrences.
The relief items distributed included both food and non-food supplies.
