NEMA Stakeholder Town-Hall Meeting on Mpox Prevention and Control

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office (AOO) participated in a stakeholder town-hall meeting on Mpox prevention and control held in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The meeting, organized by the Nigerian Red Cross Society, was aimed at strengthening collaboration and coordination among stakeholders to prevent the spread of Mpox.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Simeon Nwaubani, Red Cross Branch Secretary, welcomed NEMA and other stakeholders, stressing the importance of collective awareness and unified action against Mpox. Representing the Head of AOO, Mr. Zakari Abubakar, Mrs. Christiana Isah James commended the Red Cross for its continued cooperation with NEMA on humanitarian affairs.

The event was attended by representatives from the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Public and Primary Health Care, Federal Road Safety Commission, Nigerian Police, Ministry of Education, FCT Fire Service, and others.

Key topics discussed included an overview of the Mpox situation in the FCT, presented by Public Health Care, highlighting key facts and case definitions. Dr. Lawal Adebola emphasized the importance of effective risk communication and community engagement to prevent the spread of Mpox. Dr. Gideon Adamu shared insights on the Mpox response and management journey so far, including step-down training for volunteers, field deployments, and joint supportive supervision.

The meeting concluded with a call for NEMA AOO to strengthen community volunteerism and grassroots collaboration to ensure effective sensitization and awareness on Mpox, meningitis, and other public health concerns.
