Following the release of water from Lagdo in neighbouring Republic of Cameroon and Kiri Dam in Adamawa resulting to increase in water level overflowing river banks, which caused massive flood disaster in communities along the river banks leading to so many Farmlands, worship centres and houses being submerged in Geleng community, Song LGA. Because of the Magnitude of the disaster, many people have been rendered homeless, displaced and forced the victims to find Shelters with relations and friends in Geleng community and neighbouring communities.
The team of the assessment comprised of NEMA, SEMA, LEMC, Local Government representatives, Councilor of the Ward and Media personnel.
The team on arrived at the community at about 1: 30pm paid a courtesy call to Mai Jimilla, Alhaji Musa Waziri Geleng and informed him of the purpose of the visit. The traditional head in turn appreciated the gesture and thanked the Federal Government through NEMA for remembering the community at this trying time. The Head of Relief and Rehabilitation Unit, Ali Kadiri Moses who led the team on the assessment on behalf of the Head of Operations NEMA Yola Office. Mr Ladan Ayuba, sympathised with the affected persons and offered relevant advice that will guard against so much impact of flood disaster in future as witnessed at the moment.
The Team also assessed Loko Community to ascertain the level of damages caused by the flood. It was observed that the flood was so devastating which submerged houses, farmlands and destructroyed structural assets of the government like electricity poles, schools etc. The team admonished the community members not to block water ways, always clear drainages and avoid building on water ways and those houses along river bank should vacate for a safer grounds.
