NEMA /UNDP HOLDS 2 DAY WORKSHOP ON DISASTER DATA COLLECTION FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL DISASTER DATABASE FOR NIGERIA IN SOUTH EAST ZONE

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the United Nation Development Program (UNDP) recently organized A 2-Day workshop on disaster data collection for the establishment of a National database for Nigeria.

The workshop which was held at Ozom hotel on 27th – 28th witnessed stakeholders from relevant MDAs, Voluntary Organization, INGOs and NGOs in the south east zone.

Flagging off the Workshop, the DG NEMA Mrs Zubaida Umar stated that the increasing cases of disasters and emergencies are due to natural processes or phenomena and human activities. Speaking, she said that using digital tools for disaster data collection is the key to achieving accuracy, timeliness, accessibility, consistent, cost effectiveness, and data security when compared to traditional paper based methods and retrieval of data. Mrs Zubaida Umar who was represented by Mr Walson B. Ibarakumo the Zonal Director NEMA South East Zone called on the participants to sustain synergy/collaboration among stakeholders and to ensure harmonization of data collection for better informed decision.

Resource persons were drawn from NEMA, UNDP-SRP and University. They include: Mr. Justin Uwazuruonye (NEMA HQ), Dr. Amama Sunday Andorbe (UNDP), Mr Joseph Eta (UNDP), Prof Usman Kibon (ABU Zaria). Hands-on training on the use of Kobo collect application software was used for data entries on damage and loss by the different MDAs. Participants equally made presentations on existing disaster data to address gaps in data collection and to harmonize data collection from the various MDAs on disaster related loss and damage.

In attendance are: Abbani Imam Garki, Deputy Director, Relief and Rehabilitation, Mrs Ngozi Echeazu, Ag. ZC NEMA South East Zone, Executive Secretaries of SEMAs across the zone, representatives from relevant MDAs, INGOs, NGOs, Institution, and Voluntary Organization.
