On July 24, 2024, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North Central Zonal Office in Jos, in collaboration with the National Environmental Standard and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Plateau State Environmental Sanitation and Protection Agency (PSESPA), conducted a joint sensitization exercise on waste management and flood preparedness in Rikkos community, Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State. Rikkos was identified as a flood-prone area with waste management challenges. The exercise aimed to educate the community on proper waste disposal and flood risk reduction, emphasizing the importance of keeping gutters clear and avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
Mr. Eugene Nyelong, NEMA’s North Central Zonal Coordinator, led the initiative, highlighting the agencies’ commitment to building community resilience. Mr. Jude Appiah, North Central Zonal Director of NESREA, and the Director of Environmental Health at PSESPA, emphasized the importance of cleanliness and proper waste disposal. Two waste bins were promised to aid in waste management efforts.
The head of the Rikkos Central Community, Aliyu Gambo, expressed gratitude for the agencies’ support, particularly NEMA’s interventions during flooding events. The event included refuse evacuation and distribution of informational fliers, with participation from community leaders, the Nigerian Red Cross, Road Safety officials, and other stakeholders.
