There was a fatal road accident which occured at CBN Staff Quarters bus stop Trans Ekulu, along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Enugu yesterday 9th March 2023 at exactly 8:45am.
The accident involved an 18 seater commercial bus fully loaded and a trailer loaded with cement.
According to eyewitness, the commuter bus which loaded from Abakpa in Enugu East LGA was heading to New Market. He stated that the bus driver in an attempt to overtake the vehicle in his front which was emitting too much carbon monoxide ran into an incoming trailer that was carrying bags of cement. The impact was so much that the bus was completely damaged. He attributed the road accident to the carelessness and over speeding of the commercial bus driver.
A Team of Emergency Response Team (ERT) from NEMA South East Zone which was led by Ngozi Echeazu the Ag. Zonal Coordinator who visited the accident scene met some Policemen on ground with some passersby. According to the Police a total of Six (6) persons lost their lives while 7 persons sustained various degrees of injures. The dead bodies were taken to the morgue at the State Park Lane Hospital. Incidentally there was a private hospital close to the scene of the incident where the injured were taken to. However, at the time of our visit to the hospital, we where informed by the nurse that the injured have been discharged and their relatives have moved them to their own choice of hospitals.
The team observed that: The two vehicles involved in the accident were driving on the same lane which was due to the deplorable state of the road; The other side of the expressway is completely bad with big potholes.
People are still coming to the scene of the incident to look for their love ones who there were unable to contact.
The trailer involved in the accident is still on the road while the damaged commercial bus has been removed.
