NEMA retrains 100 emergency management volunteers in Ebonyi

A total of 100 Grassroots Emergency Volunteer Corps have been retrained in Ebonyi State by the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, South-East zone. NEMA said the two-day program was aimed at reactivating the existing grassroots emergency management volunteer corps in the area.

In his remarks during the programme, on Thursday, NEMA South-East Zonal Coordinator Dr. Onimode Abdullahi Bandele, noted that volunteerism in disaster management was well-accepted and widely practiced worldwide.

He described the training as part of measure to boost the capacity of the agency for effective and efficient disaster risk management, as well as search and rescue operations across the State.
 
He added that “the roles of these volunteers in disaster risk reduction (DRR) ranges from preparedness, early warning, disaster response and post-disaster rehabilitation which have been recognized in a number of international policy instruments, such as the Hyogo Framework for Action (2005)”.
 
Onimode further stated that the retraining of the volunteers in Ebonyi State was to improve the capacity of the community towards building a culture of preparedness, prevention, response and resilience to disaster.
 
In his speech, Ebonyi State Governor, Martins Elechi, represented by the Commissioner for Border, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Hon. Donatus Aja stated that the retraining workshop was a welcome development, as it would provide wealth of knowledge and relevant information to the volunteers on disaster risk management within their localities.
 
The Governor also applauded the collaborations of NEMA with the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency and assured that the present administration in the state was committed towards saving lives and properties by reducing the impact of disasters in the State.
 
He promised that government would continue to provide training opportunities for the State Civil Servants on disaster management related issues in the
