On July 22, 2024, officers from the NEMA Lagos Territorial Office (LTO) conducted an assessment of the Makoko and Itumora communities, which have been reported as severely affected by flood and erosion. This assessment aimed to evaluate the extent and impact of the disaster in these areas on Lagos Mainland.
The assessment team was guided through the affected communities by representatives from the Office of Hon. Moshood Olarewaju Oshin, a Member of the House of Representatives.
During the assessment, it was observed that Makoko and its surrounding areas are riverine communities with a high population density, making them particularly vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall. There is an urgent need for proper channelization in Makoko and Otumara to protect residents’ lives and property.
Due to the community’s large population, many people have been impacted by the persistent flooding. Additionally, environmental degradation was noted in some communities due to inadequate waste management.
Other locations visited during the assessment included Ilaje, Otumara, and Ereduwa.
