In its continuous efforts to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders in disaster management for effective coordination and swift emergency response, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Enugu Operations Office, participated in a one-day sensitization programme on Water Safety and Impending Flood Preparedness organized by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
The event, held on 7th August 2025 at the Onitsha Head Bridge, focused on flood risk awareness and water safety practices, with special emphasis on proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of flooding in riverine and flood-prone communities.
Speaking during the programme, the Head of NEMA’s Enugu Operations Office, Mrs. Echeazu Ngozi — represented by Mrs. Ebere Ugwu — commended NIWA for the timely initiative. She noted that the programme aligns with the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), both of which underscore the need for joint action to reduce losses associated with flood disasters.
Participants at the workshop discussed key topics including:
Environmental management and preservation of water channels
Mandatory use of life jackets for passengers and operators
Importance of maintaining passenger manifests for safety and accountability
General waterway safety and emergency procedures
The programme was attended by representatives from NEMA Enugu Operations Office, Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigerian Police, State Fire Service, Maritime Waterways Workers, Nigerian Ports Authority, boat operators, religious institutions, traditional rulers, community leaders, and members of the press.
At the close of the event, the NEMA team conducted a monitoring exercise on the River Niger water level to support strategic decision-making in flood preparedness and response planning.
