NEMA celebrates International Day for Disaster Reduction with students in Gombe state

In celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction, a globally recognized event aimed at encouraging citizens and governments to contribute to building more disaster-resilient communities and nations, officials from the Gombe Operations Office led by the Head of Operation Hajia Ummuna Ahmed of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) visited selected schools in Gombe. Their mission was to educate students on disaster risk reduction activities.

This year’s theme, “Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future,” emphasizes the crucial role of youth in disaster preparedness and resilience. The initiative focused on equipping young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and mitigate disaster risks. By engaging with students, NEMA aims to foster a culture of safety and preparedness, ensuring that the next generation is well-prepared to face and manage potential disasters effectively.

The activities included interactive sessions, educational workshops, and practical demonstrations on how to respond to various types of disasters. Students were encouraged to share the knowledge gained with their families and communities, thereby amplifying the impact of the sensitization efforts. This approach not only empowers the youth but also transforms them into agents of change, capable of contributing to a safer and more resilient society.
