National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has identified 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Anambra State at risk of flooding this year. The areas include Anambra East, Anambra West, Nnewi North, Ayamelum, Ekwusigo, Idemili South, Idemili North, Ihiala, Ogbaru, Onitsha North, and Onitsha South. NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to mitigate flood impacts based on seasonal climatic predictions and annual flood outlooks.
During a workshop on flood early warning strategies in Awka, Mrs. Umar called on state and local governments, traditional rulers, clergy, and community groups to support proactive measures to avert flood-related disasters. Governor Charles Soludo, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Gilbert Onyekachi Ibezim, supported the initiative and suggested constructing more dams to reduce flooding. The workshop included presentations on flood prediction and risk reduction strategies and involved various state and community stakeholders.
