In line with the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook released by NIMET, the Lagos Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a proactive flood awareness campaign to promote prevention and safety across Lagos State. The campaign kicked off in Oke-Isagun, a community known for recurring flood incidents. NEMA officials, supported by NEMA/NYSC Emergency Management Volunteers (EMVs), distributed awareness materials and sensitized residents on flood preparedness and response strategies.Community members were educated on the importance of preparing emergency kits with essential supplies and having an evacuation plan in place. They were also advised to relocate to higher ground during flash floods, avoid walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters, and minimize contact with floodwater to reduce the risk of contamination and disease. The campaign featured further engagement with community leaders, highlighting the need for improved waste management practices such as proper refuse disposal and regular clearing of drainage systems. Leaders were encouraged to initiate embankment projects in flood-prone areas and to designate safe locations within their communities as muster points or emergency shelters, ensuring these sites have access to clean water and other basic necessities.NEMA’s Head of Operations emphasized the importance of equipping communities with the knowledge and tools to reduce the risks and impact of flooding. In response, residents expressed appreciation for the initiative and pledged to apply the knowledge gained to better protect lives and property.
