NEMA GOO VISITS FEDERAL UNIVERSITY KASHERE TO ASSESS AUTOMATIC WEATHER OBSERVATION STATION

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Gombe Operations Office, led by the Head of Operations, Ummuna Ahmed, paid an official visit to the Federal University Kashere on Thursday 21st August 2025 to assess the maintenance, condition, utilization, and effectiveness of the Automatic Weather Observation Station installed at the institution in July, 2021 by NEMA.

The visiting team was warmly received by the Head of the Department of Geography, Prof. A.M. Abbas, who appreciated the visit and provided a detailed briefing on the current status of the equipment. Prof. Abbas explained that since its installation, the station has been in active use and maintained by the university.

According to the findings presented by Prof. Abbas, while the station has been useful, there are some challenges that need urgent attention. These include the need for resource persons to provide additional training to university staff on the proper usage of the device, as well as mechanical issues within the station that require technical experts to repair.

In her remarks, the Head of Operations, Ummuna Ahmed, emphasized the importance of the Automatic Weather Observation Station in supporting the NIHSA and NIMET, disaster preparedness and response. She assured the University of NEMA’s continued partnership to strengthen capacity building initiatives, addressed identified challenges, and enhance the effectiveness of the station for improved early warning and risk reduction efforts.

NEMA Gombe Operations Office commended the Federal University Kashere for its commitment to ensuring the functionality and sustainability of the weather observation station despite the identified challenges.
