The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Gombe Operations Office, has intensified its flood preparedness efforts with a community-wide sensitization campaign in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State. The exercise was aimed at raising awareness among residents—particularly those in flood-prone areas—on the importance of early warning response, disaster preparedness, and environmental safety.
The campaign brought together members of the local community, traditional leaders, and local government officials. Key stakeholders in attendance included the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (GOSEMA), the State Fire Service, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
During the sensitization, participants were urged to heed early warning alerts from relevant agencies such as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and adopt proactive safety measures. Emphasis was placed on the critical role of community involvement in mitigating flood-related risks.
As part of the engagement, the NEMA team—led by the Head of Operations, Ummuna Ahmed—conducted an inspection of the Dadin Kowa Dam to monitor the current water level. Although readings showed the level remained within the safe threshold, officials observed a gradual rise due to sustained heavy rainfall in recent days.
Speaking during the visit, Ummuna Ahmed advised residents to remain vigilant, refrain from indiscriminate waste disposal in drainage channels, and cooperate fully with emergency authorities when necessary. She emphasized that flood preparedness is a collective responsibility and urged all stakeholders to play their part in safeguarding lives and property.
