Heads of Varsity Centres for Disaster Risk Management Visit NEMA

Directors of Centres for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies from four Nigerian universities paid a courtesy visit to Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on 16th October 2024, at her office in Abuja.

The Directors are:

**Professor Anene Modeke**, Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, University of Nigeria Nsukka;

– **Professor Ruth Adio-Moses**, Centre for Peace, Security, and Humanitarian Studies;

– **Professor Shehu Abbas**, Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria;

– **Professor Daniel Mbee**, Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, University of Port Harcourt.

Professor Modeke, who led the delegation, extended congratulations to Mrs. Zubaida Umar on her appointment as NEMA Director General. He briefed her about the Centres for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, which NEMA played a pivotal role in establishing across six universities in different geopolitical zones. The Centres are located at:

University of Nigeria Nsukka (Southeast),

Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (Northwest), University of Port Harcourt (South-South),

University of Maiduguri (North-East), Federal University of Technology Minna (North-Central), Centre for Peace, Security, and Humanitarian Studies at University of Ibadan (South West).

Professor Modeke emphasized the universities’ desire to renew the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NEMA to strengthen the objectives of these Centres.

He said that the Centres have significantly contributed to the promotion of research, specialized training, and capacity building in disaster management, an effort facilitated by NEMA.

The other Directors also spoke and highlighted the successes achieved through these Centres, which have advanced specialized training and research, thereby contributing to better preparedness and disaster management in Nigeria. They expressed gratitude to NEMA for its vision in making these strides possible.

Responding Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the NEMA Director General, expressed her appreciation to the Centres’ Directors for the visit and their continued commitment to disaster risk management education and research.

She acknowledged the significant roles of universities in the areas of research and capacity building for disaster risk reduction.

The meeting also covered other areas of mutual interest between NEMA and the university Centres, with contributions from NEMA directors present at the meeting.

This visit further underscores the importance of academia’s involvement in disaster risk management and NEMA’s commitment to fostering partnerships that enhance preparedness and response in Nigeria.
