PIPELINE EXPLOSION AND FIRE AT THE SITE OF ILLEGAL EXPLORATION AT AWARA, OHAJI/EGBEMA LGAs, IMO STATE.

Barely one week after an explosion that claimed many lives at Obitti , another explosion occurred at Awara on the 14th February,2024 in the same Local Council Area.

The officials of NEMA Owerri Operations Office led by Mr. Nweze Innocent (ACSARO)and the Disaster Response Unit (34 Bde Artillery) Nigerian Army Obinze led by Lts M,A Haruna and S,A Isong were at the site of the explosion for on the spot assessment .

The assessment findings showed an illegal exploration and refining site in the bush . An AGIP operated and maintained gas pipeline has been vandalized by the bunkers, connected with a local pipe to a collection center not far from an access road to farms and farmland.

According to the President General of Awara community at the site, chief Nze London “heat from a timber fully loaded Diana truck that was passing-by is suspected as the possible trigger factor”.

The explosion resulted to a serious fire that engulfed the whole of the areas affecting people’s farms including about 4 dead, 2 hospitalized and the Diana truck partially burnt .
