An early morning inferno on November 1, 2023, severely affected Ladipo Plank Market in Iganmu Road, Amukoko, Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos. The fire disaster destroyed 351 shops, impacting around 1,000 traders. The post-disaster assessment by the Agency confirmed these devastating losses.

The shops, along with 25 attached stalls, accommodated at least five traders each, as reported by Mr. Sola Oyegoke, the Secretary of the Traders’ Association, who led the assessment team on behalf of Alhaji Ayelabawo Tajudeen, the Baba Loja. The market management had a practice of turning off electricity at 8:00 PM and back on at 8:00 AM daily, but the exact cause of the incident remained uncertain, despite precautionary measures in place. The management ensured thorough inspections to prevent any fire hazards.

Despite its name, Ladipo Plank Market also housed artisans such as tailors, fashion designers, and printers. The Traders’ Association had a membership list of 1,058 registered members. Additionally, two residential buildings near the market were affected by the fire.

During the assessment, traders had already cleared the burnt milling and sewing machines. NEMA emphasized the importance of safety awareness, particularly as the dry season approached, which could bring drier conditions and associated challenges.
