Assistant Secretary General United Nations and UN Regional Coordinator for Nigeria Visits NEMA Hq

The Assistant Secretary General United Nations and UN Regional Coordinator for Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Chad Mr Toby Lanzer today visited the headquarters of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja. He was accompanied by the Country Head of United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) Mr Vincent Lelei.
The visit, according to Mr Lanzer was assured the unflinching commitment of the UN to assist the Nigerian government in addressing humanitarian challenges arising from insurgency in the north east. Thus, he said the UN was interested to provide more supports for the displaced persons and affected communities as well as cooperate with the government and its agencies in this regards.

“I am here to assure you that the United Nations is solidly standing with the Nigerian government in the effort to address humanitarian challenges caused by insurgency. We are interested to move into Maiduguri and other areas. We are here to work with the government and its agencies,”

he said.
Also speaking, the Head of UNOCHA in Nigeria Mr Lelei said his organ was still focus on its primary mission to assist Nigeria in area of addressing natural disasters in addition to the on-going supports for IDPs.
Responding on behalf of the Director General Muhammad Sani Sidi, the Deputy Director Planning Research and Forecasting Mr Kayode Fagbemi appreciated the UN Chief and his team for the visit and assurances of supports to Nigeria.
