
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Port Harcourt Operations Office, joined stakeholders in Bonny Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State to discuss on finding solutions to recurring flood and erosion challenges in the area.
The summit, held on Monday, 29th September 2025, was organized by the Bonny LGA Technical Committee on Flood and Erosion Management as part of proactive measures to tackle the 2025 flood predictions.
Leading the NEMA team, Head of Port Harcourt Operations Office, Mr. Eric Ebhodaghe, delivered a presentation on the causes and impacts of flood and erosion on coastal communities. He identified climate change, indiscriminate waste disposal, construction on waterways, and poor planning as major contributors, while outlining preventive measures such as sea walls, breakwaters, reforestation, and community adherence to early warning alerts.
Mr. Ebhodaghe also assured residents of NEMA’s preparedness to support the local government in responding to flood and erosion emergencies.
The Executive Chairman of Bonny LGA, Hon. Dr. Fubara Dan Jumbo, said the summit was convened to find practical solutions and inaugurated the Urban Flood Committee to strengthen the LGA’s response capacity.
The event brought together traditional rulers, women’s groups, security agencies, multinational companies, civil society organizations, and community representatives, all pledging support to mitigate the threats of flooding and erosion in Bonny.
