

Following NIMET and NIHSA 2024 Flood predictions and NEMA’s downscaling of flood early warning strategies to the communities, the Lagos Territorial Office (LTO) and LASEMA collaborated on a workshop to Strengthen Flood Resilience in Vulnerable Communities on 20 June, 2024.
The event started with a welcome address by the Permanent Secretary, LASEMA Dr Femi Oke – Osanyintolu, followed by a keynote address taken by the Director General, NEMA Zubaida Umar represented by Mrs Nike Ibitayo (Head, SAR Unit NEMA LTO). The presentations focused on the importance of involvement of communities in early warning strategies and Disaster Risk Reduction as a whole. The need for downscaling was emphasised as disaster management is everyone’s business.
A discussant forum was created made up of key players in disaster management where critical matters peculiar to the State was addressed, questions raised and adequate answers given.
In attendance were royal fathers of identified Flood prone communities, representatives of LGA’s, secondary school students, NEMA Emergency Vanguards, the Police, NSCDC, Fire Service, State Safety Commision, LASTMA, FRSC and members of the press.
