Following a similar engagement in Gusau, the Sokoto Operations Office (SOO) of NEMA actively took part in a two-day flood preparedness workshop in Sokoto State. The event, titled “2-Day Workshop for Sokoto State Key Stakeholders on Emergency/Disaster Preparedness & Coordination,” was organized by the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency with technical support from UNICEF, and held at Dankani Hotel, Sokoto.
Representing the Head of Operations, Mr. Tukur Abubakar, Head of Planning Unit at SOO, delivered two key presentations on Nigeria’s Disaster Management System and Humanitarian Coordination. UNICEF’s Mr. Yinka Afolabi presented on Risk Analysis and outlined essential steps for effective flood response.
A tabletop simulation exercise followed to test stakeholder roles in flood response, identify coordination gaps, and recommend improvements before any potential disaster.
Participants included representatives from government ministries, NGOs, INGOs, community leaders, and Local Government Disaster Desk Officers across Sokoto State.
The workshop concluded with the development of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), derived from national disaster management frameworks, to clearly define roles, responsibilities, and response protocols for emergencies.
