EKSEMA, NEMA ADO-EKITI OPERATIONS OFFICE SENSITIZE EKITI RESIDENTS ON FLOOD AND DISASTER PREVENTION

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Ado-Ekiti Operations Office, in collaboration with the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA), has organized a sensitization programme aimed at raising awareness on the prevention of floods and other disasters in the state.

Speaking at the event the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, represented by Mrs. Aladetimehin Foluso, stressed the importance of reawakening all stakeholders to the urgent need to embark on radical downscaling of early warning signals at the grassroots. She noted that building resilience at the community level is crucial, especially during this peak rainfall period when high volumes of rainfall are expected.

The Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye, in her remarks, emphasized that the sensitization became expedient to promote a culture of preparedness, mitigation, response, and resilience among citizens. She assured that the state government would soon establish Local Government Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) across the 16 LGAs to coordinate disaster management efforts at the grassroots.

Also speaking, the General Manager of EKSEMA, Mr. Oludare Asaolu, urged citizens to take seriously the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) prediction of flash floods in some states, including Ekiti. He encouraged residents to strictly adhere to environmental laws and avoid practices that could worsen disaster risks.

The programme, held on 18th September 2025, had in attendance several key stakeholders including the Head of Service, Ekiti State, Dr.
Folakemi Olomojobi, Chairman, Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado, Permanent Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor, Mr. Bayo Opeyemi, Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Fire Service, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ekiti Waste Management Agency, Representatives of local governments and other critical stakeholders.

The sensitization exercise highlighted the joint commitment of NEMA, EKSEMA, and the Ekiti State Government to strengthen disaster risk reduction strategies, enhance community resilience, and safeguard lives and property across the state.
