Report on Training of Post-Basic Accident and Emergency Nursing Students

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Owerri Operational Office, played host to Post-Basic Accident and Emergency Nursing students from the College of Nursing, Emekuku, Imo State. The training was organized to expose the students and their lecturers to the practical aspects of emergency response, procedures, protocols, and best practices required during disaster situations.

The programme, which commenced at 11:00 a.m., opened with a prayer and a welcome address delivered by Mr. Nweze Innocent (ACSARO), who represented the Head of Operations. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of swift and effective response in times of emergency, stressing that adherence to internationally recognized principles and practices is vital to saving lives and providing timely care to casualties.

The training featured two major sessions. The first was handled by a resource person from C-Health, a non-governmental organization, and focused on basic first aid. The participants were introduced to practical approaches in handling unconscious and severely wounded victims, managing fractures, ensuring personal safety during emergencies, and the importance of immediate referral of victims for advanced care. The session was lively, with practical demonstrations and active participation from both students and faculty members.

The second session was anchored by Mr. Sunday Iweala from NEMA’s Search and Rescue Department. It provided hands-on training on extrication tools and equipment, including hydraulic cutters, spreaders, personal protective equipment (PPE), oxygen masks, and fire extinguishers. Students not only observed demonstrations but also practiced using the tools themselves. This practical exposure helped them to appreciate the realities of emergency operations and built their confidence in handling critical situations.

At the end of the programme, the team leader of the students, supported by the Dean of the College, Dr. (Mrs.) Ilemuanya, expressed gratitude to NEMA for the opportunity. She also appealed for continued collaboration, especially in advanced training and joint emergency response exercises that would further strengthen the students’ professional capacity.

The training concluded on a successful note, having equipped the participants with relevant skills in first aid, casualty management, and the operation of essential rescue equipment. It also reinforced the partnership between NEMA and the College of Nursing, Emekuku, towards building a cadre of medical professionals better prepared to respond to emergencies and disasters.
