NEMA Leads Stakeholders in Planning Meeting for 2025 Flood and Disease Preparedness in Jigawa

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kano Operations Office, led a multi-sectoral planning meeting in Jigawa State to prepare for the 2025 flood outlook and potential related disease outbreaks.

The meeting, held at the Manpower Development Institute (MDI), was organized by the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in collaboration with NEMA, and supported by the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape Project (ACReSAL).

Bringing together a wide range of stakeholders, the session included representatives from all 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs), such as Chairmen of Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) and Speakers of Councillors—who also serve as Chairmen of Ward Emergency Management Committees. Participants also included officials from WHO, UNICEF, relevant government ministries and agencies, and sectors including health, WASH, education, and security.

Led by NEMA Kano Operations Office, the meeting aimed to:

Review the 2025 flood outlook
Strengthen coordination among sectors
Share preparedness and response plans from each stakeholder group
Stakeholders gave updates on actions already taken at local levels. Many LEMCs reported activities such as clearing drainage systems, desilting water channels, and setting up local emergency response mechanisms to mitigate the anticipated effects of this year’s flood season.

The meeting emphasized the importance of early preparedness, cross-sector collaboration, and community-level engagement to reduce the risks and impact of both floods and related public health challenges.
