The monitoring exercise was conducted in response to predictions of flooding in the region, with the aim of identifying areas vulnerable to flooding and evaluating the potential impacts on communities and infrastructure.
The team visited the Gilme Dam, which is a critical water management infrastructure in the area. They met with community members, including Alh. Musa Adamu and Alh. Yau Musa, Chairman of Local Divers, Community Group.
The team also engaged with Engineer Mannir Aminu, Divisional Irrigation Officer, who provided insights into the area’s irrigation system. The area is primarily used for irrigation, and the local community relies heavily on agriculture for their livelihood.
The community experiences flooding approximately four times a year, with the main source of water coming from Anchau.
The dam is formed by the confluence of Zabi and Shika Dams, and its water level is a critical factor in determining flood risks in the area.
The monitoring exercise provided valuable insights into the water-prone areas in Zaria and Sabon Gari Zaria. The team’s findings will inform future interventions aimed at mitigating flood risks and enhancing community resilience.
The collaboration between NEMA, SEMA, Red Cross, and local government officials demonstrates a commitment to disaster risk reduction and management in the region.
