NEMA Assesses Windstorm Disaster Impact Across Communities in Ebonyi State

In the aftermath of a devastating windstorm that struck several communities in Ebonyi State on 28th May 2025, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Enugu Operations Office, in collaboration with the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), conducted a comprehensive post-disaster assessment to evaluate the extent of damage and identify the needs of affected residents.

The impacted communities include Amaike Aba in Ebonyi LGA; Centenary City, Inyimagu-Unuhu, Ndieze-Inyimagu, and Camp David in Abakiliki LGA; Osusara Ekka in Ezza North LGA; and Offerekpa Ezzama in Ezza South LGA.

Upon arrival, the NEMA team was warmly received by the Honourable Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. Mrs. Ann Aligwe, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Mr. Henry Onyebuchi Nworie.

The joint assessment team visited the affected communities, where numerous residents were rendered homeless and critical infrastructure—including the Ebonyi State Skills Acquisition Centre—was severely damaged.

During the visit, Hon. Ann Aligwe reiterated the commitment of the Ebonyi State Government to support the victims but appealed for urgent humanitarian intervention from the Federal Government, citing the overwhelming scale of the destruction.

Addressing the victims, Mr. Obinna Nwokike, who led the NEMA delegation, conveyed the Federal Government’s sympathy and support. He also encouraged the State Government to provide temporary shelters for residents whose homes were destroyed.

Tragically, the disaster claimed the life of Mrs. Theresa Nwaji Ede, who died when her roof collapsed during the storm.
