NEMA Launches 2025 National Disaster Preparedness and Response Campaign in Ogun State

In line with the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction by NiMet and the annual flood outlook from NIHSA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched its 2025 National Disaster Preparedness and Response Campaign in Ogun State. The one-day stakeholders’ engagement, themed “Strengthening Resilience, Enhancing Preparedness and Response,” was held at the State Secretariat and aimed at mobilizing communities, government institutions, and stakeholders towards effective disaster risk reduction.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter‑Governmental Affairs, Hon. Funmi Efuwape, welcomed the initiative, expressing the state’s commitment to boosting resilience and preparedness in the face of disaster. In his keynote address on behalf of NEMA Director‑General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Comrade Justin Uwazuruonye emphasized the vital role of community involvement in disaster risk management. He advocated for the establishment of Local Emergency Management Committees across the state and urged communities to move beyond relying on national interventions, making disaster preparedness a collective responsibility. He also called for intensive sensitization efforts and encouraged Community Development Association leaders to spread vital disaster prevention information within their neighborhoods.

The event brought together representatives from various communities across Ogun State, along with members of the Nigeria Red Cross Society, Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, State Fire Service, and the Ministry of Environment. It concluded with a group photograph and the symbolic presentation of First Aid kits to community representatives, underscoring the collaborative approach required to build a safer, more resilient state.
